Into the Darkness…

Laura Kasischke wrote, “Your life can change in an instant. that instant can last forever.” I never really thought about it until an instant happened to me. On August 19, 1995, a typical Saturday morning when a freak accident caused complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in my left foot and leg.

At that instant, my life was indeed forever changed. It left me in a world I did not want to live in, but there were few options at that time. It felt like I was living in “Ground Hog Day,” the movie. I just wanted to wake up and have my old life back, but every day was the same debilitating, chronic pain, over and over. At the time, the only relief offered by the medical profession was a strong dose of opioid medication.

Complex Medical

History

Battled CRPS, MAC Lung Disease, COPD, Fibromyalgia, and more.

Extensive Treatment

Over 500 doctor appointments and 5 years of experimental treatments.

Opioid Dependence

240 mg daily OxyContin with persistent pain at level 10

Turning Point: Engaging the

Endocannabinoid System

After decades of battling chronic pain and complex health issues, I found a path to healing that was once thought impossible. Medical Cannabis became the key to reclaiming my life. Not only did it help me eliminate my reliance on opioids, but it also brought unexpected improvements to my severe COPD and Pulmonary MAC lung disease.

I am now a victor in health, not a victim of the opioid crisis. By incorporating Medical Cannabis, I eliminated 25 prescription medications and reclaimed my health. Today, my pain is managed, my lungs are healing, and my quality of life has significantly improved.

Defying Medical Predictions

For 21 years, I trusted my doctors to be my sole health advocates. In 2015, they abruptly abandoned me in treating my pain with no concern for the impact on my physical and mental health due to the opioid crisis. My chronic pain was endless and I accumulated multiple health conditions.

However, little did I understand at the time, but their rejection was my opportunity to regain sovereignty over my own health and well-being. Their refusal led me to meet and learn about the ECS and through years of research and study, I not only regained the will to live, but the strength and endurance to thrive.

Doctor's Prognosis

Advised to accept limited life with 5-year morbidity in 2016.

Personal Decision

Chose to explore alternative treatments, including Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoid Therapeutics.

Unexpected Outcome

Achieved health and vitality beyond all medical expectations.

A Remarkable Recovery

Learning how to incorporate Medical Cannabis into my complex medical treatment plan opened the opportunity to discover what medical advancements are truly possible. I continue to accomplish health improvements my physicians said are not possible. Learning to use Medical Cannabis to improve my serious conditions allows me to speak from experience to advocate for safe, quality access for all. I currently utilize Medical Cannabis for the following conditions:

  • Fibromyalgia

Effective Cannabis: A Resource for Others

Medical Cannabis is giving me a life I never thought I would have or see again. I began searching for others who use Medical Cannabis who could share their results and any obstacles they may have encountered. Leading me to the point where I founded Effective Cannabis and Effective Cannabis Newsletter; portals where we can share our experiences, work to advance Medical Cannabis research and education, as we are all on the same walk to improve our health and life.

Out of the Darkness: Using Narratives to Inspire Others

As I was struggling through my health challenges, I found the power of stories played a significant role in me not feeling desperate and alone as my health spiraled downward. In each of the above tales, I discovered a profound connection that for me, represented the different phases you go through in learning to utilize Medical Cannabis as you become your best partner in your health. Tapping into narratives helps to establish an Effective Compass to guide you in your health quest and life.

Alice In Wonderland: represents curiosity, symbolizing the importance of exploring and learning about one's own health and wellness.

The Princess and the Pea: represents learning to listen to your body when it speaks to you highlighting the need for individualized approaches.

Goldie Locks: represents exploration to finding your Just Right!

Humpty Dumpty: represents putting yourself back together through resilience and finding ways to recover and adapt after health setbacks.

Have you ever heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words? And maybe, just maybe, those words don’t all come at the same time.

Take a moment to look at this photo—as I share a story with you—a story about this picture I took during one of the hardest moments of my life.

There was a time when I was very sick. I was living with chronic health conditions, and my daily pain was at a level 10. I felt trapped in my body, defeated, and honestly, hopeless. One day, I looked out into our backyard, and what I saw stopped me in my tracks.

There was a huge flock of birds. Many of them were scattered on the ground, and about eight were perched at the back end of our diving board, all facing different directions. But one bird—just one—stood alone at the very edge of the diving board.

It looked like the bird was about to dive in.

None of the other birds seemed to notice. They weren’t paying attention to what the bird was doing or where it was going. The bird looked alone, as if no one else cared or understood. And that’s exactly how I felt.

See, my doctors had told me there was nothing more they could do for me. They said, “You need to accept this as your life.”

And in that moment, I felt like that lone bird.

I was standing at the edge, feeling isolated and hopeless with no options left, and no one to turn to.

But fast forward and my life is completely different today.

I discovered my Endocannabinoid System, Cannabinoid Therapies, and for the first time in decades, I began to find relief - relief from the pain. Slowly but surely, my health and quality of life improved, and so did my hope. I started to rebuild my life.

Now when I look at that picture, I see something else entirely.

I still see that bird standing on the edge of the diving board, but this time, I see myself. Not as someone who's alone, but as someone who’s willing to lead – someone who’s blazing a trail standing tall and inviting others to join me.

The birds on the ground? They're not ignoring me. They're just waiting for someone to show the way.

And that’s exactly what I’m doing now.

I’m here to advocate for improved health and quality of life, for Cannabinoid Therapies, and for building a coalition collaborating with others to create real change. I’m still standing at the edge of that diving board, but now I’m calling to those around me:

‘Let’s do this together.’

I’m willing to lead, but I’d rather we take this leap together. Because together, we’re stronger.

So, as you look at this picture, I hope it inspires you to stand tall, look around, and take that leap—whether it’s for your own health, for someone you care about, or for a better future for all of us. This matters today, tomorrow and for generations to come.

In the Media

Cannabis Queens takes you behind the green velvet curtain to reveal the hidden truth of an industry rising out of prohibition, out of illicit markets, and into a thriving global phenomenon led by women.

It’s medical. It’s political. It’s revolutionary.

Cannabis Queens explores the complex, dangerous, beautiful, uplifting, funny, heartbreaking, and joyful relationship between women and cannabis to rewrite the negligée-clad, arched back, ‘Reefer Madness’ narrative.

Women and cannabis have a special connection.

We stand with the plant.

We are the Cannabis Queens.

Extensive Background in Healthcare

My journey in health began in 1973 when my mom was stricken with late-onset MS. At the time, I was just a mere 15 years old. Within days of contracting strep throat, she began to struggle to walk, developed impaired vision, and needed for me to spoon-feed her. Within a very short time, I became her 24-hour primary caregiver; caring for her personal needs as well as managing the household. Nothing made sense. Worse yet, I watched her endure invasive tests and grueling procedures, often leaving me with more questions than answers.

I was forever shaped and developed the ability to face challenges head-on. This life-altering experience - at such a young age - taught me resilience and compassion, which I carried into my medical career. Within me grew the unshakable drive to understand and improve health as well as advocate for patients and their right to proper care.
